The Need to Achieve
I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday. But now it’s time to get back to work and continue the Online Learner’s Bootcamp.
Over the last several weeks, we’ve discussed some of the basic human needs linked to personal happiness and our inherent drive for self-actualization, such as biological, safety and security, and belongingness (McLeod, 2007). The next level of needs, according to Maslow’s Revised Hierarchy, centers on our need to become masters, or independent owners of knowledge.
Mastery and Self-Esteem
This is what higher education is all about. You might have extrinsic or esoteric goals you want to achieve through education; however, this achievement is also a basic need you desire to fulfill. According to McLeod (2007), the need for mastery and personal growth is part of a larger process of “becoming…a self-actualized person.” Therefore, skills or cognitive mastery is an intrinsic part of self-esteem—a need all of us require to remain healthy individuals.
Perhaps you desire to earn a degree, land a coveted job, or simply feel the prestige and sense of accomplishment that comes with fulfilling your educational goals. Essentially, the pursuit of knowledge mastery is not only a wise decision, but also a key psychological component for self-esteem.
